Wild dogs don't normally need to watch where they toilet, but they are pretty keen not to toilet in their sleeping area, or food and drink areas. This instinct can be used to your favor by creating a den of sorts where your dog sleeps, and they are less likely to go potty unless they really need to. You can use a crate, or penned area where there is not too much room for them to walk away from their sleeping area to potty and go back to sleep. Because dogs live in our environment, it is our job to make sure they have enough opportunities to go potty. Dogs won't inherently know where to potty or how to tell us, so it is important to potty train our dog.
